Is Ha Long Bay worth it? (an honest answer)

Ha Long Bay is one of the most famous places in Vietnam — and also one of the most questioned.
Almost everyone I speak to asks the same thing:
“Is it still worth going, or has it become too touristy?”
The honest answer is: yes — it’s worth it, but not in the way people expect.
The expectation
Most people imagine:
quiet emerald water
empty limestone islands
a peaceful, almost untouched landscape
And to be fair, the photos suggest exactly that.

The reality
Ha Long Bay is not untouched.
it’s one of the most visited places in Vietnam
there are many boats
and at certain times, you do feel that
If you’re expecting complete solitude, you’ll likely be disappointed.
So why go at all?
Because once you’re out there, it still has something that’s hard to replicate.
The scale of the landscape is real.
The way the limestone islands rise out of the water, the light in the early morning or late afternoon, the feeling of being out on the water — it still works.
Most people come back saying the same thing:
“Yes, it was busy… but I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it.”
What actually makes the difference
This is where most itineraries get it wrong.
Ha Long Bay is not about:
rushing in and out
treating it as just another stop on the route
The difference isn’t whether you go — it’s how you do it.
Most people do a one-night cruise. And that’s fine — but it keeps you in the more crowded, more obvious parts of the bay.
What changes everything is going just a bit further.
When you spend two nights on the water, the route usually takes you deeper into the bay —where there are fewer boats, quieter corners, and a landscape that feels much more open.
That’s when Ha Long Bay starts to feel like what people imagine:
slower
more spacious
and much more beautiful
Combined with choosing the right route and giving yourself time to slow down, it shifts from:
👉 a place you visit
to
👉 something you actually experience
Who should go — and who might skip it
Ha Long Bay isn’t a yes-or-no decision.
It depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for — and what you enjoy when you travel.
It’s worth it if:
it’s your first time in Vietnam and you want to see the iconic landscape
you enjoy being out on the water, even if it’s shared with other travelers
you’re open to a more structured experience, as long as the setting is beautiful
you’re willing to do it properly (not just rushing in and out)
For most people, this is the case.
Even if it’s not perfect, it still adds something to the trip that’s hard to replace.
You might skip it if:
you’re looking for something completely off the beaten path
you’re very sensitive to crowds and shared experiences
you’d rather focus only on places that feel more local or remote
your time is limited and you don’t want to spend a full 2–3 days on the water
In that case, there are other parts of Vietnam that might suit you better.
How I usually approach it
I don’t think of Ha Long Bay as the only option — just the most well-known one.
If you want something a bit quieter, I often look at Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay instead. They’re part of the same landscape, but tend to feel more open and less crowded.
Personally, I have a soft spot for Bai Tu Long Bay — it’s a bit further out, and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer.
For most trips, it’s really about finding the right balance:
how much time you have
how important this experience is to you
and how much you want to avoid the busier parts

If you want to do it differently
There’s also another option that changes the experience completely.
If you’re traveling with friends or as a small group, it’s sometimes worth considering a smaller private boat — for example a 3–4 cabin cruiser.
That’s what I tend to do myself.
It gives you:
much more flexibility with the route
a quieter, more personal atmosphere
and the ability to shape the experience around your pace, rather than following a fixed program
It’s not for every trip — but if you’re looking for something more exclusive, it’s a completely different experience.
If you’re still unsure...
This is exactly the kind of decision that shapes how your whole trip feels. If you want to get this right from the start, we can look at your itinerary together and see what actually makes sense for you.
